[20:13]<whidgle> Is there any way I can save client sided settings that normally gets wiped after refreshing a website?
[20:13]<@jacky> camerongray: are you around?
[20:13]<@jacky> BC_Programming : ?
[20:14]<whidgle> I use a lot of time to customize a list of features to the way I want to have it, but as soon as I reset the website it goes back to default settings again
[20:20]<@BC_Programming> If you control the website, use cookies. If you are using the website complain to whoever runs it that their settings don't work properly :P
[20:21]<whidgle> I'm just a visitor of the site so I can't change source code, but it'd be nice if there was a way to save the settings somehow and not having to change everything back again everytime I refresh the website
[20:22]<whidgle> yeah cookies would do, but there is no other way than that no?
[20:24]<whidgle> The settings that I change, it's all client sided? So where is this information stored until I refresh the website and everything gets wiped?
[20:24]<@BC_Programming> "The settings that I change, it's all client sided?" I don't know. I don't run the site in question...
[20:25]<@BC_Programming> but if it is client-side settings you might be able to use something like greasemonkey I suppose
[20:25]<whidgle> Yes, it has to be client sided if all the settings are reset to default values after I refresh the site
[20:25]<@BC_Programming> you'd have to know exactly what the javascript variables are and what the values need to be
[20:25]<whidgle> right
[20:31]<whidgle> I'm assuming it's client sided because the values I enter are only stored until I refresh the site. Once I refresh all the values resets and I have to re-enter everything
[20:33]<whidgle> Once I enter the values the way I want them, it has to be stored temporarily somewhere yes?
[20:33]<whidgle> Is it in the source code, or some sort of memory or what
[20:33]<@BC_Programming> it's in memory
[20:34]<whidgle> Oh okay, so I can't access that unless I run the website?
[20:34]<@BC_Programming> You can use a DOM inspector to find the current values, though you'll have to find the variable names and there is no way to really know which settings correspond to which variable especially if it has been minified
[20:34]<@BC_Programming> No it's client side memory... in the browser
[20:34]<whidgle> Ahh
[20:36]<whidgle> so generally cookies store this memory and saves it
[20:38]<whidgle> yes?
[20:39]<whidgle> All these values on the website im talking about, it alters the way the website looks, so this is stored in client sided browser memory
[20:40]<@BC_Programming> Yes
[20:42]<whidgle> Okay I got a general idea of how it works now
[20:42]<whidgle> Thank you
[20:57]<+camerongray> Hey jacky & BC_Programming
[20:57] * @jacky is just leaving
[20:58]<@jacky> camerongray:I think BC saved the day
[20:58]<@jacky> :)
[20:58]<@jacky> good to see you
[20:58]<@jacky> bye for now
[20:58]<@jacky>
[20:59]<+camerongray> Just got 20 laptops donated to a charity I help run
[20:59]<+camerongray> My initial thoughts were "they will probably be crap but I'll see what they are anyway"
[20:59]<+camerongray> 5 of them are Dell E64
[21:00]<+camerongray> 5 of them are Dell E6230s with an Ivy Bridge i5, 8gb RAM and a 128gb SSD
[21:00]<@BC_Programming> That doesn't seem very bad
[21:00]<+camerongray> That's not bad? I then checked the 15 E6430s we got
[21:00]<+camerongray> i7 3740QM, 16gb DDR3, 128gb SSD, 320gb HDD, NVIDIA NVS 5200M (Similar to a 540m), 1600x900 LCD
[21:00]<+camerongray> Nearly died
[21:01]<+camerongray> litreally free
[21:02]<+camerongray> https://scontent-cdg2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t35.0-12/13839792_1450199968340472_1017833926_o.jpg?oh=bd43b944721dda29c8511017b128c705&oe=579E1D90
[21:02]<@BC_Programming> that's pretty cool
[21:02]<@BC_Programming> I picked up a Pi 3
[21:03]<+camerongray> Came from https://www.skyscanner.net/ - Very nice people
[21:04]<@BC_Programming> you wouldn't be saying that if they were crap PCs :P
[21:04]<+camerongray> True
[21:04]<+camerongray> I wasn't expecting too much - They gave us 6 laptops a couple of years ago - Dell Vostro, Celeron 900, 2gb RAM
[21:04]<+camerongray> Does somewhat show how the company has grown in that time
[21:05]<+camerongray> You're an MVP, you may know - Can I install Windows 8.1 directly even if the machine shipped with plain 8 using the UEFI to activate?
[21:06]<@BC_Programming> No idea
[21:06]<+camerongray> Cool, I'll give it a go
[21:06]<+camerongray> Even more fun is that I want to be able to clone the install across them without borkage or need for reactivation
[21:09] * whidgle (Mibbit@305C1570.6742CDA5.4939B128.IP) has left #glitchpc
[21:15]<+camerongray> Good job me!
[21:15]<+camerongray> I very clever
[21:15]<@BC_Programming> heh
[21:15]<+camerongray> Totally didn't plug in an external SSD to format, open GParted, then format my Windows SSD
[21:17]<@BC_Programming> oh dear
[21:17]<@BC_Programming> hopefully nothing important
[21:17]<+camerongray> Nah, I store everything on my server thankfully
[21:17]<+camerongray> Only annoying thing is that it had GTA V on it which is a 60gb download
[21:18]<@BC_Programming> oh funny story, Last week we decided to reboot our servers to install updates (Server 2012)
[21:18]<@BC_Programming> One of them came up
[21:18]<@BC_Programming> the other one didn't
[21:18]<@BC_Programming> turns out Windows Update completely borked it, so that's fun
[21:18]<+camerongray> Oh awesome! Turns out the SSD I intended to format was originally used as my Windows SSD then got cloned to the larger one I wiped
[21:19]<+camerongray> So at worst I lost a couple of random SDR recordings which is no biggie
[21:19]<@BC_Programming> We had to rebuild our server and went without jenkins and our test databases for a few days there
[21:19]<@BC_Programming> Thankfully it was .4.3 and not .4.10 as without SVN that would be a real pain
[21:20]<+camerongray> Ahh, ouch
[21:20]<+camerongray> Are you all Windows servers?
[21:20]<@BC_Programming> I think so, we wouldn't really have any reason for a Linux server
[21:20]<@BC_Programming> JIRA, CollabNet SVN, Jenkins, and Postgres pretty much
[21:21]<@BC_Programming> Oh also some VMs with THEOS on them though aside from logging hours I don't really use those myself
[21:21]<@BC_Programming> Jenkins of course could run on Linux but then building our C# stuff would be a massive pain if it works at all
[21:23]<@BC_Programming> I was going to use the Pi for a CI server then realized I couldn't really compile most of my own stuff on Linux anyway
[21:23]<@BC_Programming> So now it's just a RetroPie that annoys me
[21:23]<+camerongray> haha
[21:24]<+camerongray> Mine is just a controller for my access point because I'm too lazy to move it into a VM
[21:25]<@BC_Programming> I got it in a kit with a breadboard and resistors and LED and a GPIO header so I might fiddle with that
[21:25]<@BC_Programming> I have next week off so will probably be looking for things to do lol
[21:30]<@BC_Programming> I also got a free book the other week
[21:30]<@BC_Programming> https://www.amazon.ca/Designing-Usable-Apps-approach-Experience-ebook/dp/B00FO71Y1S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469827824&sr=8-1&keywords=Designing+Usable+Apps
[21:32]<@BC_Programming> It's written by one of my co-workers and he's moving to Holland so he gave us all a copy
[21:32]<@BC_Programming> Easier than lugging a box of them there I suppose :P
[21:41]<+camerongray> nice!
